Wakefield\/Arizona Wilderness Blood Brothers Blood Orange Berliner and Omnipollo\/Dugges Anagram Blueberry Cheesecake Stout<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Brauereien:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; The Rare Barrel was amazing at CBC (loved Impossible Soul). De Garde was incredible. But I actually particularly enjoyed the Crooked Stave beers there, especially their Origins (Burgundy Sour).<br \/>\n&#8211; Funky Buddha: It was two years back we went to CBC the first time and there was this brewery called Funky Buddha we\u2019ve never heard of before. After the first session, it was the brewery we went to first each following session. I was thrilled to find out, upon visiting the brewery, that Funky Buddha was not just a romanticized memory, but as amazing as during our first encounter.<br \/>\n&#8211; 7eventh Sun was \u2013 according to my notes(see below) \u2013 amazing.<br \/>\n&#8211; Tillium, for Vicinity but also Melcher Street, Sleeper Street and Scaled Up<br \/>\n&#8211; Almanac, always<br \/>\n&#8211; Pipeworks, always<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Orte:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Wortspiele #2: The event was a lot of fun, relaxed, great beers, good vibe. The development of this event is phenomenal:#1 had 6 participants, #2 had 16 and #3 will have 22 participants.<br \/>\n&#8211; Yes, many of the most impressive beers I had at CBC. But the event itself was off-putting in several ways, particularly because of lurkers.<\/p>\n<h3>R\u00fcckblick<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dar\u00fcber habe ich mich 2016 gefreut:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; The first half of 2016<br \/>\n&#8211; The incredible run of interviews we had last year<br \/>\n&#8211; The collaboration we brewed with BZW and it coming out exactly like we wanted, i.e. a Lager that confuses the traditionalists and beer nerds alike, but both cannot hating it.<br \/>\n&#8211; The collaboration we brewed with Blackwell. It was such a silly idea and such a huge risk and it was great Blackwell was up for it<br \/>\n\u2013 the experience was a lot of fun<br \/>\n&#8211; That the city I work in, St.Gallen, finally has a place to drink a decent beer, i.e. Br\u00fcw. Thanks Ole<br \/>\n&#8211; That New England IPAs really are enormously delicious.<br \/>\n&#8211; That we almost brewed a collaboration beer with Siren \u2013 and that the idea we discussed has popped up as Smoothie IPAs. We could have been among the first!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dar\u00fcber habe ich mich 2016 gewundert:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; That there was practically no one during the first hour of the Funky Buddha tap takeover in Copenhagen.<br \/>\n&#8211; That we almost brewed a collaboration beer with Siren<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dar\u00fcber habe ich mich 2016 ge\u00e4rgert:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; the second half of 2016.<br \/>\n&#8211; being in St. Petersburg for a brewery crawl and being so sick that the night before I wondered if I\u2019m about to die and that I have very few memories of that afternoon. US meds kicked my ass proper.<br \/>\n&#8211; getting an invite to the pre-opening party of Stone Berlin and not being able to go<br \/>\n&#8211; quite a few of the beers I had to judge at the Brau &amp; Rauch homebrew competition<br \/>\n&#8211; the growing envy and conniving in the Swissbeer scene. Seriously guys?!<br \/>\n&#8211; that we didn\u2019t brew a collaboration beer with Siren<br \/>\n\u2013 and that the idea we discussed has popped up as Smoothie IPAs. We could have been among the first!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Die goldene Medaille 2016 in der Kategorie Bier geht an:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Katie and Kouros for opening their breweries to us, so we could do Wortspiele #2 and can do #3.<br \/>\n&#8211; J\u00e9r\u00f4me and Herr Schneider, for always being incredible generous with the beers they share<br \/>\n&#8211; All those people behind the scene that make it possible for me to buy and drink beer<\/p>\n<h3>Ausblick<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Darum freue ich mich auf das Jahr 2017:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Interviewing all the brewers on our short-list<br \/>\n&#8211; Becoming a more regular home-brewer<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Darum bangt mir vor dem Jahr 2017:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Not finding time to interview all the brewers on our short-list<br \/>\n&#8211; Erzbierschof Winterthur only selling Swiss beers: I love to support local breweries, but I\u2019ll miss the option to have international beers in my local watering hole<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Das w\u00fcnsche ich mir vom Jahr 2017:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; That more Swiss breweries become daring<br \/>\n&#8211; That more Swiss breweries move from good to great<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dahin werde ich 2017 bestimmt gehen:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; The next beer tasting organized by J\u00e9r\u00f4me and Herr Schneider<br \/>\n&#8211; Dunno yet which beer festival I will manage to go to, but I want to go to several<br \/>\n&#8211; Wortspiele #3: We are putting a lot of effort into this with our friends at La N\u00e9buleuse and it lines up to be a great day: Around 30 exclusive beers, good food, music. After we ignored theReinheitsgebot for #2 we are now very excited to again ignore the R\u00f6stigraben for #3 and bring together breweries from all parts of Switzerland.<br \/>\n&#8211; The new beer bar that will open in Zurich around February<\/p>\n<h3>Sonst so<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dieser Hype nervt:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Groupthink tendencies in hop selection and beerstyle selection<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Diese Entwicklung gef\u00e4llt mir:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; That IPA gained a new kind of respect with New England IPAs<br \/>\n&#8211; That it becomes easier (note: not easy though) to buy good beer in Switzerland.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#inline-content3\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-gall=\"gall-frame\" data-lightbox-type=\"inline\">Chris Treanor, WhiteFrontier, Head Brewer<br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"inline-content3\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<h2>Chris Treanor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitefrontier.ch\/\">WhiteFrontier<\/a>, Head Brewer<\/h2>\n<h3>Discoveries<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Beers:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; The blended saison from De Garde (blew our socks off at CBC 2016)<br \/>\n&#8211; Cantillon&#8217;s Fou Foune on draft<br \/>\n&#8211; The Alchemist\u2019s Focal Banger to close the year out!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Breweries:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; De Garde at CBC, Other Half, and Blaugies were stand outs<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Places:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Copenhagen is something that never lets me down<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Websites\/apps\/magazines\/books:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Always happy to see the monthly BeerAdvocate issue come into the brewery<br \/>\n&#8211; Articles on Good Beer Hunting always a joy to peruse<br \/>\n&#8211; the New Brewer Journal from BeerAdvocate is good for nerding out with<\/p>\n<h3>Looking back<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This made me happy in 2016:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Moving to Switzerland of course, meeting some interesting characters here<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This irritated me in 2016:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Being forced to change dry hopping methods from what I knew previously; to work with the new kit here. Now it&#8217;s taking shape: We&#8217;ve hacked the hop gun to work better for certain beers and we&#8217;re getting closer and closer to what we are setting out to achieve in dry hopping with each run through.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">The gold medal in the category &#8222;beer&#8220; goes to:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Probably visiting the Blaugies brewery at the very start of 2016 and trying some perfectly conditioned Saison d&#8217;Epeautre.<br \/>\n&#8211; My favourite Swiss beer so far was tastingHoppy Tree Friends from Cinq 4000 over the Summer. I was losing faith on finding great hoppy beer this side of the country until I found that!<\/p>\n<h3>Looking forward<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">In 2017, I&#8217;m looking forward to:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Brewing some great beers- our new Hop Delivery of 2016 varietals arriving from US<br \/>\n&#8211; going for the first time to the CraftBrewers Conference in the US<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">In 2017, I&#8217;m dreading:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Nothing to dread so far! Hope the snow arrives soon!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">For 2017, I am wishing for:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Good beers to roll out of WF&#8217;s doors and to meet some great new people<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">In 2017 you&#8217;ll definitely see me in\/at:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Solothurner Biertage,<br \/>\n&#8211; Copenhagen Beer Celebration<br \/>\n&#8211; loads of WF tap takeovers<br \/>\n&#8211; Hopefully I&#8217;ll fit in Borefts this year also<\/p>\n<h3>Furthermore<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This hype is annoying:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; I don&#8217;t find hype annoying, or at least I don&#8217;t let it annoy me (neither as a brewer nor consumer), it&#8217;s good to get excited about things. It&#8217;s about finding balance; we&#8217;re too used to getting what we want fast and quickly. There&#8217;s a value to certain beers only being available local to the brewery. It is like eating the best chocolate cake in the word.<br \/>\n&#8211; Omnipollo, Noa Pecan Mud Cake Stout(Bourbon Barrel Aged): Complex and delicious.<br \/>\n&#8211; P\u00f5hjala: Topeltnelson: So much Nelson!<br \/>\n&#8211; Dugges Bryggeri, Tropic Thunder: Sour PeachTea!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Breweries:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Ominollo: These guys are blowing up and deservedly so!<br \/>\n&#8211; P\u00f5hjala: World class craft beer, straight tout of Estonia.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Places:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; CBC2016: A mind blowing experience and so many great bars in Copenhagen as well.<br \/>\n&#8211; Br\u00fcw: A great new craft beer bar in St.Gallenthat has become a meeting point for Ostschweizer brewers.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Websites\/apps\/magazines\/books:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Craft Beer &amp; Brewing Magazine: Fairly cheap subscription, lots of great interviews and brewing advice.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking back:<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This made me happy in 2016:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Relaxing evenings in Br\u00fcw talking beer andbrewing.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This made me wonder in 2016:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Multiple off brews finally convinced me to start using the BeerSmith app<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This made me irritated in 2016:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Self-made gushers.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">The gold medal in the category &#8222;beer&#8220; goes to:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Westbrook, Whisky Sour Weisse Weisse Baby: Best beer of CBC16. I went back for it at least 5 times.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking forward:<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">In 2017, I&#8217;m looking forward to:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; More craft beer showing up in the localmarkets<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">In 2017, I&#8217;m dreading:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Another bad year for hop growers.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">For 2017, I am wishing for:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Older Swiss breweries to join in and trysome new styles<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">In 2017 you&#8217;ll definitely see me in\/at:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Br\u00fcw, Wortspiele 3, Br\u00fcw, St.Gallen basedbeer events and Br\u00fcw.<\/p>\n<h3>Furthermore:<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This hype is annoying:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; I try to avoid the hype, it gets in the way of drinking good beer.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">This development is great:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; The steady growth of the Swiss beer scene.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#inline-content6\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-gall=\"gall-frame\" data-lightbox-type=\"inline\">Jan B., Etikettenbeschreiber und Mitreisender<br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"inline-content6\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<h2>Jan B., Etikettenbeschreiber und Mitreisender<\/h2>\n<h3>Entdeckungen<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Brauereien:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; 7th Sun, Dunedin, Florida &#8211; wer eine Floridareise plant und in den Grossraum Tampa geht, sollte sich dieses geschmackliche Highlight definitiv nicht entgehen lassen. So unscheinbar der Taproom ist, so gut sind die Biere, welche wie bei Funky Buddha Geschmackswelten er\u00f6ffnen, die man sich von Bier gar nie zu tr\u00e4umen gewagt hat.<\/p>\n<h3>R\u00fcckblick 2016:<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; Schade finde ich, wie das CBC kommerziell ausgeschlachtet wird und damit seinen Charme verloren hat. Die gr\u00f6ssere Halle war n\u00f6tig, dass jedoch 1\/3 f\u00fcr irgendwelche VIP Essen abgesperrt sind, finde ich schade. &#8211; M\u00fchsam dabei hingegen war, dass die gr\u00f6ssere Halle aufgrund der Absperrung wenig Erleichterung beim Gang zu den Brauereien brachte. Dies weil einerseits die massiv h\u00f6here Besucherzahl allgemein die Platzverh\u00e4ltnisse einengten, die Anzahl aber noch zus\u00e4tzlich zu langen Warteschlangen f\u00fcr einpaar Biere f\u00fchrten, welche dann wiederum ein Durchkommen verunm\u00f6glichte.- Was mich wirklich \u00e4rgert, ist, dass f\u00fcr 2017 extra VIP P\u00e4sse mit fr\u00fcheren Eintrittszeiten vergeben werden und so der \u201cnormale\u201d Bieraficadodas Risiko hat, dass gewisse \u201cgehypte\u201d Biere noch fr\u00fcher leer sind als jetzt schon.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#inline-content7\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-gall=\"gall-frame\" data-lightbox-type=\"inline\">Jan de Ruijter, Pr\u00e4sident, 1. Aus einem geplanten kurzen Besuch wurde eine dreist\u00fcndige intensive Diskussion rund ums Bier \ud83d\ude42 Dank an Stefan Hahn f\u00fcrs Initialisieren.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dar\u00fcber habe ich mich 2016 gewundert:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Brauereif\u00fchrung bei der Kona-Brauerei auf Big Island in Hawaii. Das Angebot war eine einst\u00fcndige F\u00fchrung mit anschliessender Degustation. Effektiv war es eine 20 min\u00fctige F\u00fchrung mit zwei Studenten und einer 40 min\u00fctigen Bierdegustation. Die Brauerei mussten wir mit einer Schutzbrille betreten, da mit Chemikalien gearbeitet werde (Reinigung) und auf gar keinen Fall irgendetwas ber\u00fchren, es k\u00f6nnte heiss sein! Typisch Amerikanisch halt.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Dar\u00fcber habe ich mich 2016 ge\u00e4rgert:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Lagerbiertrinker die ein &#8222;anderes&#8220; Bier probieren und es als nicht trinkbar bezeichnen. Really enjoyed trying some fresh Trillium cans that some of our team brought back from the US. It inspired us to change our hoppy beers, switching to force carbonation, reducing the amount of kettle finings to make them hazier, and throwing in some more hops! We now also put the packaging date on the front of our hoppy beers, to encourage patrons to &#8222;drink fresh&#8220; : )<br \/>\nWe started brewing more mixed fermentation beers in the summer last year \u2013 Now we are just starting to see the results and are really happy how they have come out. Look out for them in 2017!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Breweries<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; De Garde from the US impressed us at CBC with their well-defined mixed fermentation offerings.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"nomargin\">Places:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Cafe Beermoth in Manchester &#8211; The cellar has become the star of the show! Situated just behind the bar, brightly lit with windows showing the customers how clean and well-kept it is! It\u2019s great to see this as the focal point, something Jean at Moder Lambic has also been championing with the renovation of his original bar. Beer line is kept short and kegs kept at serving temperature. This is great for the beer. Our bottled hoppy beer has improved massively as a result and we no longer have to do it all by hand! Unimaginably good now, I would love to lay some of these down for 3-4 years as well<br \/>\n&#8211; BBNo have been tearing it up with anything hoppy this year too, trying their DIPA next to other DIPAs at IMBc this year though was a big eye opener.<br \/>\n&#8211; Cal and Bates have done some excellent stuff there last year.
